Epoxy Surfboards are Better For wave Pools?

Whats Better For Wave Pools (EPS Or PU)

If you haven’t been hiding under a rock for the last 2 years then you have probably seen the explosion of wave pool video hit the internet from Kelly’s Surf Ranch with endless peeling perfection to BSR Park, N Land in Austin or even the massive plunger wave from surf lake in Australia. Hear in the UK we have our very on and the world’s first commercial wave pool Surf Snowdonia that has been sending waves since 2016. These wave pool videos sent goosebumps down your spine the first time you watch them, the dream we never thought possible came true, its like seeing Disney land for the first time with the endless possibilities for perfect waves you could say its every surfer dream to ride perfect unbroken waves with no one on it but you, what’s not to like.

With this explosion of new wave pool technologies and more and more wave pool popping up we wanted to ask the ultimate question on everyone’s lips, What’s the best surfboard for wave pools?

Now you might be thinking there is no difference from the wave made in the ocean and the waves made in a pool, but there are some subtle differences that will make a big difference to your surfing. If you take the wrong board you might not surf as well and potential for missed waves but if you get it right and take the right board with you, you’ll have the time of your life.

Firstly we have to define what’s the difference between a sea ocean wave or a wave pool wave?

Saltwater vs. Freshwater

It really comes down to these 2 things how salt water reacts is different to fresh water and they have slightly different characteristics most wave pools are made with fresh water and if you didn’t already know, freshwater and saltwater have different buoyancy characteristics. Saltwater has 1.6 lb’s (725 Grams) more buoyancy than freshwater. This affects surfing in a huge way as the surfboard that has the correct amount of buoyancy for you in the ocean won’t have the right amount in a freshwater pool. There lies the problem

So to fix this problem you will need a board with a little extra float in buoyancy or Litres volume meaning that you will need more foam and buoyancy in your board in a freshwater wave pool. If you don’t want to change your dimensions the best way to get the same performance is to decrease your surfboards foam density. One of the easiest ways to do this is to use an EPS foam and Epoxy Construction board.

The EPS foam is a lot of lighter foam and has a lower density that PU foams

Most surfers are turning to Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) construction for their wave pool quivers. For many years the majority of surfboards have been made from Polyurethane (PU) but because the EPS foam is lighter in weight the surfboard weight is less and will have higher volume and more buoyancy. This is so so imported when considering what surfboard to use for a freshwater wave pool.

Ideal Wave pool Surfboard Characteristics

When thinking about the best wave pool board you have to look at the wave pool like you would any other ocean wave. What characteristics does the wave have and what would be the preferred characteristics you would need from board to surf it well. Just like you probably wouldn’t use the same board for a 1-2 foot beach break as you would a 6-10 foot barrelling reef break.

Most wave pools at this current time produce a wave that is in the region of 2-4 feet the wave shape is usually sloppy and unless its Kelly’s surf ranch it’s not going to be more than a 10-15 second ride. Because of the freshwater and saltwater differences in buoyancy, you are going to need more Litres volume or Different foams like EPS and Epoxy Instead of PU And polyester.

Small wave board

Shorter in length, 2-3 inches and thicker than your traditional saltwater board will help heaps. Hight volume and flatter rocker also give it plenty of speed in your turns on weaker waves

Higher volume

More volume should help counteract the salt water fresh water buoyancy issues or surfing in a wave pool, it will also help you stay in the pocket a little better.

Epoxy Eps Construction

Epoxy boards are more durable and have a springier responsive flex characteristic than PU boards sit lower in the water and are more sensitive and have a more dampened flex characteristic when surfing.

Light Weight – Heavier boards will bog down in most surf pools and with a mall area to play with you need all the speed you can get.

Groveler based shape

These are going to be the best as they will allow the best of both works for most average surfers, speed power and flow with the extra width and thickness will help keep the board moving even if the wave doesn’t have to much power

Flatter rockers

This is highly recommended especially in the UK wave pools as the waves predominantly don’t have so much power so keeping the flatter rocker will help with plaining speed

High Volume than usual adding on 2-3 more litres that your normal saltwater board should help keep you floating about right

The Perfect board for a wave pool is?

A board that’s light in weight and very lively under your feed you want quick response time and lighting reaction to maximise your time on the wave flatter rocker and more volume in the centre which can help generate speed will give you the edge over other boards. EPS boards will be a better option as they are lighter, more buoyant, more forgiving, and geared toward generating speed. When the worlds best surfer competed at the surf ranch a lot of the worlds best opted for EPS Epoxy construction as it fitted their best needs of the wave for high-level performance

New Surfboards

The Fish Finger

The Fish Finger Is The latest slice of fun in our SBS range and its one of the smoothest fun surfboards we have ever made. The inspiration for this board derived from some incredible retro fish designs we had 10 years back and we wanted to make something just as fun with a more performance element to it perfect for sandbars and beach breaks.

The Fish Finger has a pretty traditional fish outline with its wide point right up front to make catching waves and paddling super easy its then pulled back into a smaller fish tail than most traditional fishes to help with turn quicker and create smoother carves. It’s got a pretty flat rocker compared to most board we make with only a small amount of nose lift which helps this board to rocket down the line in smaller waves.

The main feature of the fish finger is its iconic channel down the centre of the board leaving you with 2 chunkier raised rails helping to channel water towards the tail to generate speed and drive down the line.We would recommend for more skilled surfers they you get a few inches shorter than your traditional shortboard, this should help keep the incredible speed and drive created form the board and still give you that high performance feel when you release in turns.

The fish finger is ideally placed in between your small wave groveler and your performance shortboard for knee Hight to overhead sized surf.

The Fish Finger Features

  • Superfun fish shape  for lose and

The Detonator allows you to pick and choose from thruster to quads depending on the conditions making this board extremely versatile in big and small waves.

We have increased the volume in key areas and slightly lowered the nose entry rocker to make this board easier to paddle and catch waves, without losing that instant responsiveness for quick rail to rail transitions.

Ideal for year-round surf in the UK, especially in the 1-5-foot, range. We shrunk down our motivator design and gave it a bit more width and volume, combined with its flatter nose entry rocker and slightly less lift in the tail. The wide point has been brought forward making it like an absolute rocket in smaller waves. The added volume upfront means it can create incredible speed from the get-go and makes the board fly’s over flatter section with absolute ease. Its got a Single concave through the entire board, with tonnes of foam in the center under your chest to help paddle speed and catching waves, as well as giving you the buoyancy and planning speed to get through any flat section.

Jack Buckingham Reviews The Predator Surfboard !!

JACKS REVIEW
Our Team Rider Jack Buckingham has been surfing The SBS Predator model for over a year now, he’s surfed it in small waves, big waves, pumping waves and mushy waves. So we thought who would be better to give you the lowdown, on how the predator stands up after a year of surfing.  Jack’s review gives you an idea of just how particular we are and how much testing we put our boards through, to make sure they not only surf incredibly well, but they last the test of time too!

[elfsight_instagram_feed id=”4″]

Jack Buckingham

This is without a doubt the best small wave surfboard I have ever ridden

Jack is an SBS Boards Team rider and sponsored surfer who creates daily vlogs about his surf adventures around the UK coast line. Jack regularly surfs for hours a day, creating some great in depth and raw videos that showcase whats it’s like to be a surfer living in the UK. Jack shares the trials and tribulations of surfing in the winter, those daily struggles with cold water, usually pretty windy and rubbish conditions, all in his endeavour to search for those perfect waves.

The Predator

The Predator is one of our favourite all-rounders and one of our best-selling surfboard. It’s designed with the perfect balance of high-performance features and modern comfort.

For Jack’s style of surfing, he needed a board that was fast, loose and able to take on almost any waves. The board had to be responsive and adaptable enough to be surfed well in small waves, but really hold well in bigger surf, that’s where the Predator comes in with its hybrid outline, that is shorter, wider and thicker than your average surfboard. It’s got plenty of volume and width upfront under your chest, which is then pulled back into a more refined, rounded pin tail, giving the board a really unique riding style.

The volume up-front gives it that ease of use when paddling and pumping down the line, whilst the pulled in tail keeps it smooth, fast and responsive allowing you to be more agile in tighter sections of bigger waves.

It’s got a super flat rocker throughout, with a little more lift in the nose to help take on the bigger drops, whilst the added extra foam under the chest area really improves paddling speed and catching waves.

ABOUT THE SHAPE

Its widest point is a little further up the board than most conventional shortboards,  allowing for a wider nose and width that is carried through the entire board, giving great speed on any size wave.

It’s gradually pinched down into a foiled rounded pintail, giving less volume in the tail, so you retain that instant rail to rail response of a performance shortboard. It has been slightly tapered in the tail and the nose, giving it a balanced and stable feeling, with a tone of forgiveness in turns. The board’s graduating single concave forces water towards the fins to help generate speed and drive, giving incredible grip in your turns, especially in bigger waves.

The Predator is a really fun, fast and light all-around board that’s going to give you the confidence and speed in bigger waves, as well as the paddle power and wave count in smaller surf. ideal for intermediate – expert surfers.

After 1 year of surfing our Predator surfboard, jack’s board is still in great condition and ready for another year of intense surfing. if you want to check out some of Jacks most recent videos, check out his channel in the link below.

!!!The BEST Small Wave Surfboard !!!

Team rider Jack has been putting the predator surfboard through its paces last few months and this is his verdict.

Our Team Rider Jack Atlantic is back at it again with another Vlog about what he’s been up to surfing in the UK winter.

This episode jack shows off his predator board that he has been frothing on since he got it in 2017. It’s been his go to in the smaller waves because of its versatility of higher volume upfront but high performance in the tail, just watch jack surfing some little gems in a quiet beach and you might just have to agree with him.

Show jack some love and subscribe to his youtube channel or give the video a thumbs up
