Are Epoxy Surfboards Better For The Environment?

Are Epoxy Surfboards Better For The Environment?

Why are Epoxy Surfboards Better For The Environment?

Surfing is getting More Environmentally friendly than ever before we as a tribe are more conscious and environmentally aware of our actions as a surfer. In the creation of our beloved surf creations we use our fair amount of toxic products from surfboards, foams & wetsuits to our not so environmentally friendly travel plans that might include a trip to Bali or a few hours drive to get to the perfect surf.  But with more and more eco-friendly options available can me chose to be a more environmentally friendly surfer with the products we buy. electric cars, recycled products, bags for life and getting rid of any single use plastic is a great start but  but as surfers how can we chose our surf gear to be better for the environment. There is a growing movement to make more eco-friendly surfboards and other surf products. There are some incredible new product that we are working on ourselves in partnership with other companies to procure more ECO friendly surfboards but most of the surfboard industry uses PU foam + Polyester resin or Epoxy resin with an EPS Foam with most smaller surfboard companies still use polyester resin and polyurethane resin from the 60s

Looking in to these 2 main types of production of surfboard in the world we wanted to ask the question which one is better for the environment and why. Ats SBS boards we started out making PU boards back in 2010 all the way through to 2013 until we switched complete to epoxy construction across all our board. the reason were mostly performance based advantages with others like better durability and more ECO friendly that PU boards. Below are our reasons why we think Epoxy Surfboards are better for the environment

Last Longer

Yep epoxy boards are harder to break, as we stated previously they are stronger and better for the environment with less toxicity involved in the process but they also last longer meaning you don’t have to buy a new board as often helping to decrease landfill. If you have ever surfed an epoxy board or bought a second-hand one you will probably notice it has far fewer compressions and signs of wear and tare as it has a higher tensile strength and better impact strength compared with standard PU. It can be very difficult to permanently dent or break, through intense surfing and even if it’s been used for 1-2 years most usually have very minimal or no visible damage to the deck or rails. Overall its our thoughts that as the surf industry goes is moving to a more sustainable approach to building surfboards customers are more aware than ever where their products come from and companies in the future will have to ensure that their board are hitting all the bases and produced ethically and in an environmentally friendly way if they want to stay current

Better for the environment

We use epoxy resin because it’s much stronger and less toxic than polyester resin. Polyesters resins contain styrene which is subject to increasingly stringent controls on emissions. Epoxy’s do not generally cause any problems with atmospheric pollution and epoxy resin has 75% fewer VOCs (Volatile Organic compounds) contained in the resin itself and two-thirds fewer VOCs are released into the atmosphere than from polyester resin (VOCs are a source of air pollution and can be a significant health hazard). Their are also companies working on a fully recycles surfboard  with high performance starting from grinding down eps and then melting it to be combined with new foams or a reusable resin that after a few years of using your board you can take it back to its original state to be reuse. there are a lot of exciting prospects in the surfboard industry today. At SBSboards we at experimenting with bio foams that still have an incredible  performance and  rigid flex but is 100% biodegradable, 99% bio based, and carbon neutral. In our view epoxy is the resins of the future with numerous of different concoctions and applications, it’s such a tunable medium! Research into renewable, bio based, epoxy resins such as “super sap” are producing some incredible results especially when compared to polyester which is less tunable, cheaper more toxic and more, brittle.

Stronger

We are so confident in our construction techniques at SBS Boards that we regularly demonstrate its strength and toughness compared to other poly/pu. This high strength and durability gives us the confidence that if you drop or knock an SBS board it is less likely to break or ding compared to a standard poly/pu board, therefore helping your SBS Board to stay stronger for longer giving you great value for money as you won’t have to replace your board as often. helping keep those boards out of the dump. Epoxy Resin has much Better adhesive qualities as well as superior strength and flex properties. Structurally epoxy surfboards exhibits greater tensile strength meaning more durable in the surf and to dings. Epoxy strength and modulus is close to double that of polyester, thus its Improved resistance to fatigue and micro cracking. This helps to keep that original flex for years were as the flex responsiveness can be lost over time on a PU board. This also helps reduced degradation from water ingress giving epoxy a much higher resistance to osmosis. All of this helps to keep an epoxy surfboards original integrity and performance so you can make your money go a lot longer way.

The BULL…. Our Perfect Surfboard For Every Day

The BULL…. Our Perfect Surfboard For Every Day

The BULL…. Our Perfect Surfboard For Every Day

The Bull is one of our favourites for most of the conditions we get here in the UK windy mushy lumpy waves that aren’t perfect, and yer sure we would all love to be ripping like Kelly Slater on or performance boards in 1 foot mush but in reality we need a little help to create the speed and power required.

The Bull is our answer to the smaller waves of the summer and the windy messy surf of the winter

1 Packed Full Of Volume

The Bull is our most fun short board to date “it does all the work for” just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. The bull is going to thrive in whatever wave condition it in, anything from knee to head high waves to bigger surf, a perfect board for those smaller “mushier” days.

The width and the thickness of the bull means maximum stability while also giving you unparalleled paddle power in the line-up, resulting in you catching more waves easier & faster. It has a slightly narrowed and foiled tail so it will retain that high performance responsive feel in the turns, whilst gliding over flatter sections with ease. The Bull is really going to make those smaller days a whole lot of fun.

2 Its Wide & Super Stable

This is going to be a great transitional board for beginners or anyone who wants to downsize from a longboard to something a bit smaller. This board is also going to be great for surfers that don’t surf so much on a regular basis as well as advanced surfers who want that little extra speed, power and stability in smaller waves. A great all-around entry-level small wave board.

Overall the Bull is going to be Simple fun and easy to ride, we guarantee this board will make you smile. The bull comes standard as a 5-fin option because it works well as both a thruster fin and a quad fin setup. This board tends to be ridden most often in the smaller surf, but the versatility in the 5-fin setup allows the bull to work in more powerful waves from anything from knee-high to head high.

3 Flat Rocker

One of the most important design aspects of any surfboard is its rocker and the spud stick is no different and as you can see its rocker its pretty flat Its low entry rocker allows it to plane quickly and pick up speed whilst also making paddling super easy. It also has a lot more lift in the tail rocker to allow for hard tight turns without losing speed. This is great for beginner surfers looking to catch more waves or more advanced – expert surfers looking to get shorter in length to leverage the smaller length to improve weight transfer  (nose to tail). Advanced surfers will also love the speed power and flow created on small waves to help boost airs and create tight turns even on the smallest of waves.

Size Guide

Construction

STANDARD

Using our Superfused closed cell foam in combination with a bamboo wooden stringer this will be a familiar feel for many surfers duel lamination on the deck and bottom, for a great strength impact to weight ratio and with an impact resistant foam this means far fewer delaminations and better spring longterm in the lifetime of the board, compared to a standard 4×4 lamination our boards come with 10oz of cloth on the deck to resist the pressure and denting you commonly get on other boards.

Is Kelly Slater The Best Surfer At Pipeline ?

Is Kelly Slater The Best Surfer At Pipeline ?

Kelly Slater is no stranger to one of the worlds most famous waves. Pipeline the pinnacle of  Hawaii north shore  and the ultimate proving ground for any surfer this isn’t your regular beach break of France or the UK this is the real deal. Pipeline is know as the Ultimate wave on the north shore because of it intense tube rides and is shallow bottom, all whilst being so close to shore you can taste the sand. its got deadly rip currents, hard reef with plenty of holes and caves to get stuck in on wipe out, not to mention its one of the more hollow waves on the planet, its no wounder then that pipeline is the hub of action every winter with the final contest of the WSW ( world surf league )being held at pipe every December and the Volcome pipe pro in January. Its no wounder that careers can me made and end here. Surfing this waves come with consequences a lot of great pro surfers have died at the famous waves or had near death drowning experiences. Its a wave that’s so demanding that getting the perfect shoot of clip hear can make or break you. Just look at the careers of legendary locals that become pipe specialist and boosted a pro surf career form surfing one wave. With so many pro surfing pipeline incredibly well over the years i might be difficultly to say who’s the best at surfing one of the gnarliest wave son the planet.

Well we think there is one true stand out and it may come as no surprise to you that we think Kelly Slater is the best to ever to surf pipe now sure i know what your saying surfers like Andy irons , john john Florence and Jamie O’Brien are defiantly some of the best but if there has to be one best, our pick is Kelly and here’s why

5 Reasons Why We Think Kelly Slater Is The Best Surfer At Pipeline

(1) Experience

Its no secret that Kelly Slater is getting older hes no longer the Baywatch 18 year old he used to be but with age come the all important wisdom that’s needed to surfing a place like pipeline now Kelly hold many pipeline records he has one the pipeline masters more than any other surfer  he first one it in 1992  and has been the most consistent surfer in the vent winning it 7 times with the last being in 2013  hes also the oldest Pipe Master  ever to win at age 41.

Now being an incredible all-round athlete and having incredible desire to win might help you be the greatest surfer of all time with a casual 11 World Champion titles to his name  Kelly Slater’s record is undeniable and after surfing pipeline for over 20 plus years every winter, You can safely say his experience of the spot is like none other on the tour and we have seen just what Kelly can do when his back is up against the wall. Although the champ is on the other side of 40 with a long list of injury’s as well as physically double the age of some of the competitors on tour you have to wonder how long he can keep doing this. but thinking Kelly is out would be like keeping Michael Jordan out of your all time fantasy basketball team.

(2) Consistency

Kelly Slater is probably the most consistent surfer on the planet he just loves to surf but his greatest strength is his consistency with all the smaller details Kelly’s not just catching fluke waves or the boom sets that come through. Hes consistently there every winter on all the good days hes even got wave of the winter in 2014 and wone more peiple line events than any other surfer let alone be the top 2 in a pipeline event for the best part of 20+ years.

(3) Performance

There is no argument that Kelly Slater isn’t a good surfer, he has taken on the worlds best at pipeline and won many times beating surfers like Andy irons Jamie O’Brien and john Florence in an epic final at pipe in firing waves,  not to mention this hes an 11 time world surfing champion won more events that anyone in history and won the pipe masters 7 times. Kelly has won against almost every other great or good surfer at pipeline because of his performance in the tube aswell as wave knowledge, hes just incredible on a surfboard coming out of waves that would don’t think its possible. Even at 46 yeas young he competed at the 2018 pipe masters and Kelly fell off his board in the barrel and some how managed to get back on his board and come out the tube if this isn’t a true sing of the best pipeline surfer ever i don’t know who is.

(4) Knowledge

Surfing pipeline isn’t just something your average Jo walks up on the beach and paddles out and drops in first wave, the locals might not be to happy with you. its a whole new experience for surfers with some times 40-70 surfers in the water, you could say the line up is pretty crowded. Pipeline has its own pecking order and strictly enforced with localisum. Kelly Slater has earned his right to be in the line ups because of his time spend at the spot hes taken his fair share of beating over the years and showed just what hes capable off when the waves get big. To become a pipeline expert you have to know everything people line up the best way to do that is to surf it  “a lot” and that’s exactly what Kelly has done for almost the last 30 years from a young grommet working out the take off points, learning how different swell directions and trade winds affect the waves, which ones to miss and which ones to go on all comes with experience. Most surfers on the world tour would come to Hawaii for 4-6 weeks but Slater would come earlier that most others and stay later than anyone else just to learn everything he can about pipeline as well as master other Hawaiian waves.  Putting in that extra time over the years and really helped him command the line up and he know every spot.. He even said hes been snorkelling over the reef when its flat to learn what the reef looks like underneath the waves. now that’s dedication

(5) Motivation

Most professional surfers Kelly’s age have retired from professional surfing years ago, even world tour veterans like 3 time world champion mick fanning retired at 37 compared to Kelly’s 46 with a 9 year difference why does Slater continue to push the boundaries of what he can do at pipeline. If you have ever read anything about Kelly Slater or seen any interviews you will know hes a smart guy and knows his body will get weaker with age but his mind is stronger but he also loves to win, competing is a driving force for him to progress and to be fair hes been doing it his whole life, so you can guess hes got pretty good.  Staying fresh and staying in the mix with the new younger generation gives Kelly that fire of competition and also gives him that motivation to keep improving and stay in shape to even extend his surfing career longer. Who knows, we might see Kelly Slater crowned as pipe champion at 50 or 60 you never know with Kelly Slater.

We want to know what you think

Is Kelly the greatest pipeline surfer ever or is he just over hyped, we want to know if you think differently and who you would put as the best pipeline surfer ever.
