What A Vegan Surfer Eats In 1 Day

What A Vegan Surfer Eats In 1 Day

What A Vegan Surfer Eats In 1 Day

With the growing movement of veganism in the UK and the rest of the world, we wanted to explore what it means to be a vegan surfer in the UK. as our video above shows one of our team rider JACK and what he eats in a day as a vegan surfer in the UK

Veganism has quite literally skyrocketed over the last few years with more people than ever choosing to enjoy a plant-based lifestyle.

If you were unsure of what it means to be vegan don’t worry we have all you need to know. Choosing to eat vegan means you would not eat or use animal products so no meat, cheese dairy honey or any other parts of an animal that are incorporated in food. Vegans not only avoid animal products but they also avoid any exploitation of animals for any purpose, with compassion for the animals health and well being the key reason most chose to eat vegan. many other vegans also refrain from buying products that have been tested on animals such as makeup, cleaning products and most bathroom items. Vegans would also refrain from buying any clothing or products that have animal body parts in it so, for instance, most gelatine sweets, leather sofas, shoes or belts

But you’re in luck as a surfer in the UK there has never been an easier time to become vegan and you won’t be alone veganism has taken off in the UK as now almost 3.5 million British people call themselves vegan out of the 66,590,551 British total citizens which equates to around 5% of the Uk population.

Awareness of slaughterhouse practices as well as influential documentaries like what

the health and forks over knives have really shaken peoples core beliefs about food and the benefits of eating a plant-based diet.

Going vegan doesn’t have to be hard tho with over 22,000 register vegan services and products registered with the vegan trademark it’s so easy to do

As a surfer, you might think about going plant-based not only for the animals but for a whole host of other reasons we looked at in our blog

WHY EVERY SURFER SHOULD BE VEGAN .

Reasons like a plant-based diet can be healthier for us and improve our overall physical performance and as a surfer who doesn’t want to surf better and for longer maybe it’s your diet holding you back.

As Surfers that might hit close to home like reducing our carbon footprint on the world as the most up today scientific evidence suggests reducing the impact we have on the environment is essential in the future progressions of the planet most scientists suggest that a change in diet would be more environmentally friendly than most other eco friendly measures like buying an electric car or not using planes and minimising petrol and diesel car usage.

scientists estimate that the production of meat dairy and cheese can be accountable for over 35% of our overall greenhouse emissions,”

Its estimate if animal food production s was to stop and all meat eaters switched to a vegan diet  it would roughly half the overall greenhouse gas emissions currently produced by the planet.

Kelly Slaters Wave Pool Full Story !!

Kelly Slaters Wave Pool Full Story !!

Kelly Slaters Wave Pool Full Story !!

KELLYS WAVE

The 11-time world champion of surfing, Kelly Slater made dreams come true for almost any surfer on the planet, when he released his first “Kelly’s Wave Video”. it was the stuff of dreams and our wildest dreams at that! Perfect man-made waves that were consistent, had power, barrels and not mention… up to 40 seconds long. When that video broke into the surfing world, it also came with its fair share of haters of course, for the change it might cause in the future and how surfing, as a sport will progress from this point on. One thing is for sure though surfing will never be the same.

‘The New Yorker’ talks about how the wave pools have changed surfing history, how everything before them is now from one era and everything post-wave pools is another and he’s right. For as-long as there has been a world tour, surfers have travelled all over the world surfing perfect and sometimes pretty crud waves, but the anticipation of a swell, an event and how unpredictable the waves will be is the exciting thing about watching as a spectator. Having the events only on when the conditions are optimal also gives them the element of uniqueness and excitement. But with wave pools being able to turn on waves every 2-3 minutes like clock work, delivering the same wave every time, it can take away that exciting and mysterious part of surfing culture. The sheer terror as you watch someone pull in to a super heavy unpredictable wave, over a shallow reef makes it gripping to watch. The WSL (World Surf League) tested an event at the surf ranch and of course it’s mesmerising to watch, but i can’t help but feel that a little bit of the magic is lost, when you know you’re going to get the same wave as the person before. Some of the drama and the unpredictability is lost as a spectator.

Don’t get me wrong, i think Kelly’s Wave Pool and wave pools in general are an incredibly cool thing, i hope they will be good for the progression of surfing, but as they say in the video, if someone that has grown up surfing in a wave pool, only ever known perfect waves, in a controlled environment, then decides to paddle out in the ocean, in a constantly changing environment, where skill and experience are key, especially when it comes to paddling and surf safety – This is where the potential for wave pools to be a problem exists. They might create a proficient surfer in a wave pool, but also a potential casualty or risk to others in the ocean.

Which ever way you look at it, wave pools are coming so we will have to embrace them what ever the outcome.

WAVE TECHNOLOGY

Kelly’s wave pool isn’t the only one on the market trying to catch our attention and potentially paying good money to have our surfing fix. Weber Wave Garden and a few other companies are all improving, building test pools, their first commercial facilities, trying to be the first to crack the market and be one of the first to conquer this whole new business opportunity.

For wave pool manufacturers the idea isn’t about just creating waves for surfers, it’s about expanding an industry that has long been associated with coastal communities, expanding to land locked areas, to increase participation and potential revenue. Can you imagine if surfing had the kind of numbers participating that football or basketball has?! It would be immense and that’s were the gold rush lies in the wave pool game. Each company wants to be the first in the market to become an established, superior wave pool and an industry leader.

Even with the power of Kelly Slater at the helm of one of the worlds most perfect wave pools, it has no doubt spurred other companies to up their game with wave pools and the surfers representing them. Companies working with different technology, working towards a commercial wave pool, that can produce a lot of waves consistently is the ultimate goal and as you can see from some of these wave pool clips, these companies are pretty close to creating something special.

Being in the UK we are pretty lucky, we were the first country in the world to have a commercial wave pool, built for the public use. Surf Snowdonia, built in Snowdonia, Wales uses wave garden technology, to propel a small 2ft wave over the duration of about 15-20 seconds of ride-able wave time. This like most wave pools was the first of its kind, so a lot of things have been learnt since then, especially with target audiences and who is visiting these wave pools. As much as we all want massive barrels and perfect peeling waves, the beginner market is were companies like Surf Snowdonia are making their money. They have been pretty much fully booked since they opened and there’s a reason offering a safe, guaranteed wave for people to learn in is very appealing. After spending 3 years as a surf instructor i know it can be difficult to get the right conditions to teach in, some days it’s too big and dangerous and some days it’s flat. But guaranteed waves sound pretty perfect from a beginner point of view and even more so for surf schools.

The UK will also make history by 2020 as one of the only places in the world with 3 wave pools; “The Wave” being built in Bristol, utilising The Wave Garden Cove technology, to create different types of waves more suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, as well as being a prime location for a lot of surfers from Devon and Cornwall to travel to, which has the largest surf community in all of Britain. The UK will also have another first as London prepares to have its very own wave pool, which i can only imagine to be fully booked on completion. With these wave pools in surfing, who knows were surfing in the UK could be in a few years time.

What Kelly Slater Eats For Breakfast

What Kelly Slater Eats For Breakfast

What Kelly Slater Eats For Breakfast

What Does Kelly Slater Eat For Breakfast?

If you know anything about professional surfing, you will know that the 11-time world surfing champion, doesn’t do anything by halves as his long winning legacy and competition know, he will do almost anything to win. His desire and determination to win is so high that Kelly has almost become an enigma of the sport, transcending from an actual competitor to more of a living legend or myth, Kelly employs powerful psychology known as “Kelly Slater mind games” and the look of death. But out of the water Kelly is training just as hard on his nutrition to get that physical edge.

Kelly like a lot of pro athletes these days make sure his diet is on point, he is known to be one of the healthiest guys on the pro tour, but as a kid Kelly said it wasn’t always that way, as he ate lots of fast food and sugary snacks, but in his early 20’s he made a conscious decision to get healthier. Kelly is renowned for his knowledge about nutrition, he actively seeks out the latest nutrition research and advice, and as Kelly says “it all starts from the morning breakfast”.

(1) Smoothies

Kelly has long talked about his love affair with smoothies, Kelly loves a smoothie especially as a quickly absorbed breakfast that doesn’t take much time to digest. Perfect for a pre-surf meal and full of energy to last the session, smoothies are perfect nutrition choices for Kelly’s breakfast. Kelly makes keeps his smoothies pretty simple and the ingredients can be found almost anywhere which fits in with his nomadic lifestyle travelling from place to place all year long.  All you need is a blender some fruit and veg and you’re done.

Kelly likes to build his breakfast smoothies like this…

  • Coconut water/ almond/ soymilk as a base
  • Fruits and berries
  • Bananas
  • Chia seeds
  • Veg(sometimes)

The idea of a smoothie in the morning is perfect for a surfer, as a smoothie is quickly absorbed giving you instant energy after you fasted for 6-8 hours sleeping, also helps give you some readily available sugars for your body to use as energy in surfing for those early dawn patrol sessions. There is nothing worse than having a great big breakfast with all the trimmings just to feel bloated and lethargic afterwards, especially if you plan on surfing after, you might find yourself in chunder city pretty soon.

Why Smoothies are great for surfers.

Smoothies are almost the perfect food for a surfer, many would argue that tacos and burritos are the prefered surfer snacks, and your not wrong those are pretty good, but pound for pound the smoothie wins every time for what it can do for your body. Now like Kelly you may surf in a variety of conditions throughout the year, warm and cold water, and in those winter months having a high volume of fruit and veg can really help keep those colds at bay especially after a post-surf when your feeling run down.

Smoothies are a perfect way to get a nutritional blast and a massive energy boost on those early morning rises, really helping to give you get hat instant energy you need to paddle out-back, so keep that blender handy and ready to go.

Smoothies can help improve nutrient absorption especially when mixing dark green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, collard greens, these nutrient powerhouses can be absorbed up to 3 times faster than chewing alone. Along with those greens, the fruit you add in can give you a real boost on energy and help improve your digestion because of the large amounts of fibre from the leafy greens, over time this can massively help improve your digestion process, as well as help to grow your good gut bacteria.

As a UK surfer, you are in a constant battle to stay healthy after a winter surfing session, loading up on phytonutrients, abundant in dark green leafy vegetables and fruits, can help fortify your immune system and keep you illness free all year long. Dark green leafy veg is also great for overall body health. The calcium and vitamin K from the veg helps keep our bones strong over time and as we age, vegetables are also packed with antioxidants such as vitamin A and C, which can significantly lower your cholesterol and help to decrease your risk of heart attack or stroke.

(2) Fasting

Kelly also might skip breakfast and go straight for a surf, sometimes he doesn’t eat at all, fasting trying to detox his entire body of toxins and bad food through 3-5-day fasts, which can be great for gut health. Kelly, of course, eats other foods for breakfast from time to time but as he says in the videos these are his staples every morning if he’s going to eat anything,

(3) Chia Seeds

Kelly has been a long-time advocate of chia talking about their benefits and ability to make you feel full, these tiny seeds of goodness have been in Kelly’s staple daily diet for a long time.

Because of Kelly’s natural nature, he reads everything especially food labels and ingredients, he likes to make sure what he’s eating is good for him and eat as many whole foods as possible. Chia seeds are perfect as they are High in omega-3, protein, fibre and a great source of antioxidants, not to mention they fill you up so much more than a big greasy burger. So if you want to stay trim try adding chia to foods like oatmeal or smoothies you will find it soon fills you up with energy.

(4) Kombucha Tea

Kelly has long talked about his experiences with different cultures and his thirst for nutritional knowledge, that thirst has led Kelly to be a long-term advocate of the well-known Chinese fermented tea called Kombucha. Kombucha has been around for almost over 2000 years and first used in China as a cure-all tea, to help heal and cure people of their ailments, Kelly drinks it because of its many health benefits including properties that help fight arthritis and cancer.

(5) Eating A Sustainable/ Clean Breakfast

The 11-time world champ isn’t just a favourite with his fans because of his surfing ability and blue eyes, he’s a really lovable guy who really cares about the planet and the world we live in. Kelly talks about knowing the damage of what you put in your mouth, and the effects of the food you eat.

Clean Eating & Sustainability are all about knowing where your food comes from and feeling comfortable putting that food in your body, respecting the food chain and making sure your food is sustainably sourced and the process should be a goal for anyone. Do you know how your food was produced? Knowing how it was produced treated and how that affected the local ecosystem is really telling and a better way to live your life.

Kelly tries to always opt for whole foods, staying away from highly processed foods that often have unnatural chemical based ingredients and low nutrient content. If you check out Kelly’s Instagram you will see the majority of his meals are more plant-based and raw, based around fresh produce and not too many variations of food, keeping it simple.

Adding variety of the same nutrient is the best way to attain great full body health, for instance if you get all your protein from chicken why not try and get all of the other amino acids from a whole range of food sources like beans, chickpeas, lentils, quinoa, peas and hemp,  you will get none of the saturated fat or cholesterol but all of the benefits of eating a variety of different nutrients.

Would you eat like Kelly Slater for breakfast to improve your surfing let us know in the comments below?

WHY KELLY SLATER WENT VEGAN

WHY KELLY SLATER WENT VEGAN

WHY KELLY SLATER WENT VEGAN

The King Of Surfing Goes Vegan “Kelly Slater”

Kelly Slater the 11-time world champ of surfing has always been known for eating pretty healthy, and if you watch any interview with him talking about food by god he knows a lot about health and nutrition. But more recently on Kelly’s social media channels, he has been talking about his adoption of a vegan (plant-based diet) in the videos the 11-time world champion said: “I haven’t had milk for probably 20 years now.”  And for good reason for those of you that follow Kelly he talks out about the ethical problems with drinking milk and eating other dairy products and has always been opposed to eating most animal products and prefers getting his protein from things like chia and plants.

What was the real reason Kelly slater went vegan why now and why at this point in his surfing career. Well Kelly touches on a few points that are critical to his change in his diet as well as him looking to stay at a very high-level kelly is also trying to fight off injuries as well as old age and sticking to a plant-based diet is one way he’s upped his game. Kelly is well known for his surfing performance but out of the water has a fierce ambassador for environmental change and reducing greenhouse gases and all in all trying to help the planet.
  • Eco Warrior

Helping to reduce carbon footprint -through reducing his meat consumption and the production of meat is the easiest way any of us can help reduce co2 production more than any other action.
  • Healthier

Kelly being super into his nutrition from a young age has developed a nutrition knowledge to envy the top nutritional scientists. since his farther death from cancer, Kelly has made a conscious choice about food and what he puts into his body, eating a more plant-based lifestyle over the last 15-20 years with the rare occasion for meat or dairy. science show a whole load of health benefits of going vegan here is just some of those benefits

as a pro surfer on tour for over 20 years, Kelly has seen his fair share of oceans and the pollution caused by humans that end up there. All of our waste usually end up in the ocean and making that connection with what you eat and consume and how it affects the environment around you is incredibly eye-opening. Kelly defiantly trying to limit his impact on this earth by taking meat off the table. Take a look at a few other pro athletes who extending their careers and thriving at the top of their sport on a vegan diet
  • Improved Surfing Performance

Kelly heading in the later part of his career isn’t just phasing out he’s still trying to go for world titles. with his last year on tour, looming keeping his body in good condition is a top priority to keep his energy levels high and injury risk low. A vegan diet can help reduce chronic inflammation as well as stabilise blood sugar levels. A plant-based diet can also give you a really steady supply of energy and help keep the PH of your body at a lower level. younger guys had fallen off tour with injuries and just lost there way and with Kelly looking to make his final year that elusive 12 world title we can only hope that the plant-based diet gives him the superhuman strength to compete at the highest level.

Whatever your thoughts of kelly slater turning vegan if an 11-time world surfing champion and someone as smart as Kelly himself see potential benefits especially in a competitive surf arena then what it can do for the average jo could be incredible. let us know if you think you would go vegan to improve your surfing.
