5 Weird Superstitions Most Surfers Believe In

Superstitions can be a weird thing that might not have any real world or scientific evidence to back them up, but people still believe that walking under a ladder, or meeting a black cat in your path can give you bad luck, even breaking a mirror… 7 years bad luck! Now you might just be clumsy and not believe in any of those, but I bet you believe in at least one of these common surfing superstitions. Surfers as a whole aren’t generally too bothered by superstition but when it comes to surfing itself, it’s a different ball game.

check out our top 5 weird superstitions most surfers believe in and let us know if you believe in any of them

Never Leave Waves to Find Waves

If you’re having an enjoyable surf session and the waves are good, don’t leave… The idea that waves might be better just around the headland, or less crowded is a bad one. Thoughts like; ‘I bet its pumping over there’, or ‘let’s just have a look, we can jump back in if not’. are always dangerous, if you’ve found waves stay in and froth out! Being on the south coast we know how to froth over small, crumbly, crud waves and flat spells in the summer. You really have to just be happy you got waves, it’s almost always a sure thing that if you get out in the hope for better waves, when you arrive it will be worse and that gamble for better surf has just wasted half your session. Don’t gamble.

Don’t Tell Fellow Surfers You’re Leaving.

This is a weird one, some people believe in… some don’t. in some places, people can get really aggy about you mentioning that you’re going back in. it’s like an unwritten code that you don’t do this because soon as you mention it, the winds will change for the worst,  there will be massive lulls and the swell will just die. if you want to go in just give people a wave, nod or just paddle in and wait on the beach, but by no means tell the other surfers that you are getting out and leaving the water. Mother nature and the surf gods are always watching and listening!

Don’t Wear Green in Indo

This superstition isn’t so widely acted upon from tourists and other surfers, but within the local community it’s very well known and adhered to, to the point where sponsored Indonesians refuse to wear rash vests, or even sponsors boardshorts because of the potential outcome. The main superstition is that if you wear green boardshorts, use a green surfboard or have a green t-shirt… basically if you wear anything green, the sea will take you and never let you go!

Now, this does have some credence because throughout Indonesia most people believe in some kind of faith, as well as other mythical and more obscure things such as black magic. In Indonesian culture it is said that the queen of the southern seas ( Ratu Nyai Loro Kidul )  is depicted in all green and any man that goes in the ocean wearing green will be taken by her, because she wants to keep them for herself and will never let them go. You can see where this superstition comes from and it does have some truth, the Indonesian ocean can be a rough place, take Bali for example, lots of people die in the sea each year and naturally, some of them are wearing green.. so depending on who you talk to, it’s true… Better off leaving the green boardies at home…just to be safe!

Don’t Use a Yellow Surfboard in Africa

This superstition has some legs to stand on, even if you don’t surf you will remember the incredible videos and images buzzing around the internet and of Mick Fanning fighting off a shark attack, in Jbay on the world tour. This video and live stream went viral worldwide and really shined in the spotlight on shark attacks, as well as professional surfing.

Naturally, all the local myths and superstitions came to light, but ultimately it is backed up by some evidence, as well as a number of surfers in the local area who claimed sharks attack yellow boards a lot more than any other colour. The locals even have a name for surfboards that are yellow, they call them ‘Yum Yum Yellow’. However this may not be just limited to sharks in Africa, it may be all over the world, but because of the extent of shark attacks in Africa on yellow boards, it has given birth to the superstition predominantly there. The real-life scientific data shows that sharks have no real colour preference and aren’t attracted to yellow more than any other colour, but that may just mean more testing is needed.

Myth or not it’s probably worth making your next spray job any other colour than yellow if you’re surfing in Africa!

The New Board Curse (A New Surfboard Will Always Mean Bad Surfing Conditions/Session)

We have all been there, you’ve been waiting weeks and months for your new stick and it finally arrives! You can’t wait to take it out on the water and get it wet, but as soon as you get down to the local beach, the conditions look crap and the next week looks like windy, mush on magic seaweed. Most surfers can relate and probably agree it is almost guaranteed to bring bad luck. When you’re pumped to ride your new board, it’s never firing, or one of the good days, if it is you will probably end up snapping your board in half, or getting a ding. Sometimes it’s better to brave the mush and get through it and then look forward to future swells.

Whether you believe in these superstitions or not is up to you, some hold an element of truth, but most are just superstitions or folk law, we want to know if you believe in any of these, or are there any superstitions you live by?

Why Are So Many Pro Surfers Going Vegan ?

Why Are So Many Pro Surfers Going Vegan ?

Why Are So Many Pro Surfers Going Vegan ?

Why Are So Many Pro Surfers Going Vegan?

If you’re in the know, you might see a lot of our favourite world tour pro surfer posting more pictures of smoothie bowls and hashtagging the words vegan in their Instagram post. You might not really care or even bother what these pro surfers eat, but over the last few years, there has been a real change in the way we eat especially in the surf world. The big Vegan tag isn’t only for hipster and animal rights activists who want to jump on the bandwagon of today’s what’s a hot topic, are a legitimate lifestyle and diet change that is giving these pros the edge in performance and recovery that’s backed up by modern science. So, if you were thinking about improving you airs or working on your rail game maybe the fuel that you eat could have the answer.

The King Vegan Kelly Slater

Kelly Slater the 11-time world champ of surfing has always been known for eating pretty healthy, and if you watch any interview with him talking about food by god he knows a lot about health and nutrition. But more recently on Kelly’s social media channels, he has been talking about his adoption of a vegan (plant-based diet) in the videos the 11-time world champion said: “I haven’t had milk for probably 20 years now.”  And for good reason for those of you that follow Kelly he talks out about the ethical problems with drinking milk and eating other dairy products and has always been opposed to eating most animal products and prefers getting his protein from things like chia and plants.

 John John

Yep the now 2 time back to back world champ is pretty much living of a plant-based diet and if John John has got enough energy to win world championships then I think it’s probably good enough for me and you John John said “I’ve become increasingly aware of food and its effects on the human body. All signs point to the idea that a plant-based diet is far superior to that of high animal-product intake.” When you a pro surfer looking for any edge you can get maybe having that extra energy or less inflammation post surf is allowing John to find that extra gear and win competitions.

Alana Blanchard

Alana has been the pin up girl for Ripcul and with her killer surf style and gorgeous looks who wouldn’t want to live Alana life. Being aware of her footprint in the world as well as super conscious about her health and the food she eats Alana has been eating this way for years and know with her hubby jack and their baby they will be living the ultimate vegan surfer family Alana said “One of the reasons I am vegan is because I love animals so much and could never even imagine hurting one.”

And if you think about it as surfer we tend to think of ourselves and more InTouch with mother nature than most why have the death of another being on your plate just to eat when its not necessary.

Rob Machado

One of surfing most iconic and most loved soul surfers Rob Machado is one surfer you probably love for his laid-back approach to surfing and his love of all the fish shapes in surfboards. But one thing you might not know about Rob is that he’s been predominantly a plant-based diet for most of his life rob said “I was raised a vegetarian so I was always aware of environmental issues. There wasn’t a whole lot of vegetarians around in the 80s—so we were ahead of the curve in that way.” Obviously, rob know better than most the massive effect that animal agriculture has on the environment from ocean dead zones from animal waste to dumping of toxic water quality from runoff farms. As a surfer that’s hugely affecting your health on a daily basis. And going plant-based means you eat about 90 or so fewer animals a year so 90 lives saved means that you also don’t contribute to the system that is destroying the planet.

Jack Freestone

jack being from a classic auzy background was raised on meat and a typical diet a lot of surfers might relate to. Since meeting Alana he has seen the light and become fully fledged plant based not only for potential health benefits but for ethical reasons do.

Tia Blanco

If you follow surfing younger scean or the ISA then you might know of a pretty promising surfer called Tia Blanco she won her 2nd gold medal at the (ISA) International Surfing Association world cup and is set to be heading to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were she will compete in the first Olympic surfing event in history. Tia has been vegetarian since birth but made the change to go vegan because of ethical reasons Tia said “I went vegan for the animals. I love them all and I don’t want to eat my friends.” She’s also has an online YouTube channel were she talks all things vegan and also shows you what she’s eating day to day. Tia contributes a lot of her success to a vegan diet obviously making it easy to stay lean and health but also helping her to lose the fat, gain muscle and have loads more energy. Is there anything a vegan diet can’t do   Tia Also said in an interview with teen vogue “I love animals too much to contribute to … suffering,” “From an environmental standpoint, animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.” And Tia we are totally with you.   As a surfer doing our part to keep the oceans healthy is massive guardians of the sea and to have a huge affect it only requires that I don’t eat animal products then I’m all in with you.

The Bull “Small Waves Big Fun”

The Bull “Small Waves Big Fun”

The Bull “Small Waves Big Fun”

The Bull is our super fun small wave surfboard that sits right in between out spud stick and our motivator shortboard slight more refined than our spud stick in outline

1 Packed Full Of Volume

The Bull is our most fun shortboard to date “it does all the work for” just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. The Bull is going to thrive in whatever wave condition it’s in, anything from knee to head high waves and especially perfect in those smaller “mushier” days.

The width and the thickness of the bull means maximum stability while also giving you unparalleled paddle power in the line-up, resulting in you catching more waves easier & faster. It has a slightly narrowed and foiled tail, so it will retain that high-performance responsive feel in the turns, whilst gliding over flatter sections with ease. The Bull is really going to make those smaller days a whole lot of fun.

2 Sizing Down

This is going to be a great transitional board for beginners or anyone who wants to downsize from a longboard to something a bit smaller. This board is also going to be great for surfers that don’t surf so much on a regular basis as well as advanced surfers who want that little extra speed, power, and stability in smaller waves. A great all-around entry-level small wave board.

3 Flat Rocker

One of the most important design aspects of any surfboard is its rocker and the spud stick is no different and as you can see its rocker its pretty flat Its low entry rocker allows it to plane quickly and pick up speed whilst also making paddling super easy. It also has a lot more lift in the tail rocker to allow for hard tight turns without losing speed. This is great for beginner surfers looking to catch more waves or more advanced – expert surfers looking to get shorter in length to leverage the smaller length to improve weight transfer longitudinally (nose to tail). Advanced surfers will also love the speed power and flow created on small waves to help boost airs and create tight turns even on the smallest of waves.

Size Guide

Construction

STANDARD

Using our Superfused closed cell foam in combination with a bamboo wooden stringer this will be a familiar feel for many surfers duel lamination on the deck and bottom, for a great strength impact to weight ratio and with an impact resistant foam this means far fewer delaminations and better spring longterm in the lifetime of the board, compared to a standard 4×4 lamination our boards come with 10oz of cloth on the deck to resist the pressure and denting you commonly get on other boards.
