4 Reasons Going Vegan Can Help Your Surfing

4 Reasons Going Vegan Can Help Your Surfing

4 Reasons Going Vegan Can Help Your Surfing

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ~ Hippocrates

Whether you’re a pro surfer or your average joe we all want to get better at surfing, improving is name of the game and having a blast whilst you do. Eating food as any surfer know is possibly the best feeling post surf devouring everything in sight but is that food fuelling us or slowing us down and holding us back in the water can going plant-based help your surfing, we have seen the research its a “yes”.

When you think of the word vegan you might just think it means a shorter word for vegetarian. Well, that’s not quite right, Vegan is actually a lifestyle choice to eliminate any animal-based product and foods from your life and mostly eat a plant-based diet consisting of grains, legumes, nuts, beans, fruits, fungi and veggies which is considered by science to be one of the healthiest on the planet. Vegetarians still eat animal by-products such as milk cheese and eggs. So how can the vegan diet help you as a surfer

4 Reasons a Vegan Diet Can Help Your Surfing

(1) Less weight to carry

Probably the number one reason a lot of people might try a vegan diet is to lose a few pounds and get leaner and cutting out those high-calorie foods like meat, eggs, cheese, and dairy really start to get you those lean surfer abs.  Add in surfing to the mix and you got a recipe for a lean muscular body that power to weight ratio is incredible. the less body fat you have the better when it comes to power to weight ration as well as make planning a lot easier and even allow you to go smaller boards or leas foam which can help with performance. If you are carrying a few extra doughnuts in your stomach you will probably find that your overall weight affects your performance in paddling and planning speed a lot of vegan athletes including some of the world’s best claim that a plant-based diet has allowed them to become faster in the water and use far less energy due to their decreased weight and leaner phasic. This is really beneficial if you trying to improve and can quite hit that next turn the way you want maybe your diet is holding you back.

(2) You Will Have More Energy

many vegans who compete in sport or exercise talk about the increase in energy levels, professional endurance runners Rich Roll talks about the incredible energy you got from going plant-based and how his body was running on jet fuel instead of the normal (petrol) he had been feeding his body for years. Olympic weightlifter Kendrick Farris went vegan and got stronger and put on more muscle and he got energy levels they haven’t experienced since childhood. You may be asking why are these top-level athletes getting better well plant-based foods contain all of the essential vitamins and nutrients we need to perform at our best not only this they have an incredible amount of fibre which is hugely important for overall health and detoxification of the body. Also eating more plant-based give you just the raw ingredient without a whole load of preservatives, additives, sweeteners, and other artificial ingredients you can’t even pronounce. When you remove these from your diet you allow the body to digest and process food way easier allowing more energy to be used for other thing giving your body the function better closer to 100% rather than the 60%-70% most people are accustoming to.

(3) Recover Faster After Surf

if you’re lucky enough to surf a good few days a week then you will know that post surf feeling of exhaustion if you seriously committed you might even be doing 1-2 surfs a day plus working which will mean you going to be Real tired and that next day you going to want to still be performing at your best. Well, this is eating plant-based comes in as plants are known as nourishing foods. Plant foods do just that Nourish our body’s allowing the muscles to heal after the work of surfing, replenishing lost vitamins minerals nutrients and micronutrients lost in the surf.  If you have ever had a longer surf of 3-5 hours you will know the lower and upper back ache after a surf as well as joint pain for hours of prolonged exercise this is due to the body being inflamed, the body’s natural response to protect itself from injury or infection. Plant foods to the rescue as pretty much all plant-based foods contain incredible anti-inflammatory properties that release and alleviate this pain and reduce inflammation helping you to recover and heal quicker after your surf. So rather than going for some fast food fix or a fried feast maybe have a smoothie ready with some fresh fruits and veggies in it with some walnuts, garlic, turmeric, and you will notice you recover is a lot quicker and you will be back in the water before you know it

(4) Sleep Better

If you looking to improve performance, then a lot of it comes down to sleep if you look at top level altheas they always ensure they got good quality sleep the night before their event. British Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy and Ronaldo famously have sleep coaches that look at the quality of their sleep and how diet affects it. Sleep has a direct link to performance as well as your body’s ability to recover. As we said before about Inflammation and muscle soreness isn’t great for your recovery but it can also change your sleep quality. If you’re eating a large amount of meat and animal-based foods, your digestion could also be keeping you awake at night when it should be in repair mode. We know Eating plant-based foods requires less energy to digest but eating animal-based foods such as meat, dairy, eggs and milk can take double (sometimes triple) the amount of time to digest. Animal products can also increase inflammation markers in the body known as C-reactive proteins. These are what we talked about before contributing to inflammation, muscle soreness, and even an unhealthy heart.

If you eat plant-based foods you might know that they are Hight in fibre as well as, vitamins and minerals like magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin E  which all help to reduce inflammation and improve your overall health and function. Most veggies are also natural sources of complex carbohydrates that help the body produce serotonin and melatonin (making you feel happy and relaxed) which helps the body go into a deep sleep and your body to get to work repair and replenish glucose in the muscle cells. So if you having a restless night and looking to get a better night sleep for that big swell tomorrow cut out the animal foods and add in the plant-based ones you will wake up with a real zing in your step due to better, deeper sleep and less achy muscles!

These are just a few ways in which a plant-based diet can help to improve your surfing performance but don’t just take our word for it check out or other blogs about why professional surfers and athletes are going vegan.

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

Sam from SBS boards

What I use and the team around me uses to get our shots. what lenses we use settings and all the rest that goes with taking photos and video for surfing.

I will start by saying im no camera guru. I have grown with knowledge and equipment over the years to get the shots we get for all of our review videos and quick edits for our Instagram channel.

The Basics

if you new to this type of photography/video like most sports photography you will want a camera that can focus fast as although you will be waiting for waves or your particular rider to get up and riding once up you want to catch the action as fast as possible. Surfing is one of these passions that takes place quite far away from the shore and you can get waterproof housings that go over your camera so you can get closer to the action.the king of shots will be talking about will be from the beach where everything can be framed and you get a steady shot.

Basic Equipment list

1: Long focal lens 200/300/400/500mm

2: Vidio or Photography camera

3: Tripod (A Must)

4: Sun Cream, Hat, Windproof Shell

Tamron 150-600mm
Sony a6500 camera
Tripod
Sun Hat

1: The Lens

The Lens may or may not be the most important part of the setup and usually is more expensive than the camera. usually known and Telephoto lenses,
I currently use a Tamron 150-600mm lens this gives me the flexibility to shoot closer to the shore if necessary and also way out back on the set waves. as a basic introduction to these kinds of shots, I would start with a 300mm these can be bought from most manufacturers as a 100-300mm zoom lens this is a great starting point Some shots of the setup and zoom you can expect with this lens (insert images)

2: The Camera

iv been using the Sony a6500 for over a year now with 4k and a good HD Slomo and lightning fast focusing with native lenses this camera has served me well on 2 Team trips for shots over a year as well as multiple other shoots. the mirrorless cameras have an added bonus as they have a smaller sensor size they can also get a further reach on full frame sensor lenses such as the Tamron 150mm-600mm Amount Lens. with the smaller (Cropped Sensor) on the A6500, this lens becomes in effect a having a 225mm – 900mm lens this is huge when trying to get close to the subject. the only problem with this is that a lens that fits on one type of camera and camera that fits another means you need an adaptor to get them to work together I use the sony laea4 adaptor this allows me to use most of the functionality of the camera to its full potential but with limited effect in certain modes (i will talk more on this) the added benefits of this camera, it can take superfast consecutive images at 11Fps thats 11 photos per second continuously up to I believe 60 seconds for the surf it best to burst mode as you only usually want the more exciting bits turns, airs, carve’s etc.

Tamron 150-600mm
Sony La-ea4 Adaptor
Sony a6500 camera

3: Tripods (Are A Must)

When zooming in at such long distances a slight wobble in the camera or lens creates an exaggerated wobble on the camera this is amplified further when shooting in slightly windy conditions. to improve these Tripods are a must, there are two main differences in tripods video tripods usually heavier and have additions support and a bigger video head on the tripod for smoother shots, the weight although seems like a hindrance actually helps stabilise the camera shake more. the Photography tripod usually lighter and less bulky. as camera shake is less important as you are (freezing a moment) in time as opposed to (recording everything). these range in prices depending on materials and construction I would not go for anything less than £80 for a tripod although that may seem a lot to someone starting out a good tripod is a good foundation that everything is built on, for photography you can also use a monopod or even handheld but with surfing you can be waiting around a while, so i would take something to support the camera.

4: Sun Cream, Hat, Windproof Shell

its the things you can easily forget but while standing on a beach you wish you had! Sun Cream – is an obvious one you don’t want to get burnt even if it looks cloudy it’s surprising how burnt you can get. The Hat – something with a brim or peak is ideal this will help with seeing the camera screen or through the viewfinder and reduce the amount you have to squint. The Windproof – while standing still for a while you will start to feel the cold especially when the wind picks up this also doubles as a camera lens cover if you get a downpour of rain.

Alternative Recommended Camera setups

we have a mix of setups in our team canon Canon for photos and also Panasonic for another video angle
Here are the setups and prices highs and lows of each.

The Sony Setup (Video & Photo)

Tamron 150-600mm

£600-800

Sony La-ea4 Adaptor

£200-£250

Sony a6500 camera

£1000-£1300

The Sony Video set up for me is a great setup a bit of work with the adaptor focusing can be an issue at times, but if left in wide focus area has proved most successful for me. the 11fps is great for photos and the versatility of the 4k and HD-slomo is great to see the clip below for slomo.

The Good
in-body, stabilisation helps with camera/ lens shake reduction
the cropped sensor allows me a longer focal reach ideal for long-range surfing shots.
reasonably lightweight fits in my bag no problem

The Bad
Batteries – I eat through batteries like nothing else maybe its because I bought the non-sony branded batteries but one every half hour when videoing,
LCD SCREEN – hard to see in sunlight and upping the brightness just kills the battery faster, I use the digital viewfinder for the best results and battery efficiency
Adaptor – the adaptor is a plus and minus as you lose many useful functionality features from the camera such as follow focus tracking and some focusing modes.
Get Verry hot if used in direct sunlight and recording in 4k can get Verry hot. Pulling the screen away will help this a little

The Canon Setup (Photography)

Canon 100-400mm

£1200-£1400

Canon 7d MkII

£700-£800

Canon 1.4x extender

£250-£400

This has been an incredible set up for photos I can’t speak highly enough at the out of camera shots sharpness and speed of this set up, you may have to play with the manual setting to get it just right but if you are starting out sports mode is a great starting point a fast shutter speed will freeze the action and all water in its place.

The Good
Large range of great lenses
High frames per second shooting 10fps
cropped sensor for additional reach see picture
Lightweight option compared to a fixed 500mm prime lens
Versatile reach close to far-reaching with the 100-400 lens or 160-640 equivalent on this camera body

The Bad
video – No 4k but a great HD colour rendering out of the camera

Some shots recently taken

The Panasonic Setup (video)

Panasonic 100-400mm

£800-£1200

Panasonic GH5

£1300-£1500

Setup Designed specifically for video has in-depth feature for video greater codecs and multiple recording modes for better post-production this has been used in addition to the sony setup as an alternate angle and in addition in case one or the other cameras miss a crucial wave.

The Good
Vidio specific DSLR
Great out of camera 4k up to 60fps and HD 180fps slomo
cropped sensor for additional reach
Lightweight compact option
stabilisation combo of in body stabilisation and lens stabilisation for smoother shots.
Great Battery life
Bright screen easily visible in sunlight

The Bad
limited lenses available
difficult to auto focus in diffrent lighting conditions

The BULL…. Our Perfect Surfboard For Every Day

The BULL…. Our Perfect Surfboard For Every Day

The BULL…. Our Perfect Surfboard For Every Day

The Bull is one of our favourites for most of the conditions we get here in the UK windy mushy lumpy waves that aren’t perfect, and yer sure we would all love to be ripping like Kelly Slater on or performance boards in 1 foot mush but in reality we need a little help to create the speed and power required.

The Bull is our answer to the smaller waves of the summer and the windy messy surf of the winter

1 Packed Full Of Volume

The Bull is our most fun short board to date “it does all the work for” just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. The bull is going to thrive in whatever wave condition it in, anything from knee to head high waves to bigger surf, a perfect board for those smaller “mushier” days.

The width and the thickness of the bull means maximum stability while also giving you unparalleled paddle power in the line-up, resulting in you catching more waves easier & faster. It has a slightly narrowed and foiled tail so it will retain that high performance responsive feel in the turns, whilst gliding over flatter sections with ease. The Bull is really going to make those smaller days a whole lot of fun.

2 Its Wide & Super Stable

This is going to be a great transitional board for beginners or anyone who wants to downsize from a longboard to something a bit smaller. This board is also going to be great for surfers that don’t surf so much on a regular basis as well as advanced surfers who want that little extra speed, power and stability in smaller waves. A great all-around entry-level small wave board.

Overall the Bull is going to be Simple fun and easy to ride, we guarantee this board will make you smile. The bull comes standard as a 5-fin option because it works well as both a thruster fin and a quad fin setup. This board tends to be ridden most often in the smaller surf, but the versatility in the 5-fin setup allows the bull to work in more powerful waves from anything from knee-high to head high.

3 Flat Rocker

One of the most important design aspects of any surfboard is its rocker and the spud stick is no different and as you can see its rocker its pretty flat Its low entry rocker allows it to plane quickly and pick up speed whilst also making paddling super easy. It also has a lot more lift in the tail rocker to allow for hard tight turns without losing speed. This is great for beginner surfers looking to catch more waves or more advanced – expert surfers looking to get shorter in length to leverage the smaller length to improve weight transfer  (nose to tail). Advanced surfers will also love the speed power and flow created on small waves to help boost airs and create tight turns even on the smallest of waves.

Size Guide

Construction

STANDARD

Using our Superfused closed cell foam in combination with a bamboo wooden stringer this will be a familiar feel for many surfers duel lamination on the deck and bottom, for a great strength impact to weight ratio and with an impact resistant foam this means far fewer delaminations and better spring longterm in the lifetime of the board, compared to a standard 4×4 lamination our boards come with 10oz of cloth on the deck to resist the pressure and denting you commonly get on other boards.
