Is Kelly Slater The Best Surfer At Pipeline ?

Is Kelly Slater The Best Surfer At Pipeline ?

Kelly Slater is no stranger to one of the worlds most famous waves. Pipeline the pinnacle of  Hawaii north shore  and the ultimate proving ground for any surfer this isn’t your regular beach break of France or the UK this is the real deal. Pipeline is know as the Ultimate wave on the north shore because of it intense tube rides and is shallow bottom, all whilst being so close to shore you can taste the sand. its got deadly rip currents, hard reef with plenty of holes and caves to get stuck in on wipe out, not to mention its one of the more hollow waves on the planet, its no wounder then that pipeline is the hub of action every winter with the final contest of the WSW ( world surf league )being held at pipe every December and the Volcome pipe pro in January. Its no wounder that careers can me made and end here. Surfing this waves come with consequences a lot of great pro surfers have died at the famous waves or had near death drowning experiences. Its a wave that’s so demanding that getting the perfect shoot of clip hear can make or break you. Just look at the careers of legendary locals that become pipe specialist and boosted a pro surf career form surfing one wave. With so many pro surfing pipeline incredibly well over the years i might be difficultly to say who’s the best at surfing one of the gnarliest wave son the planet.

Well we think there is one true stand out and it may come as no surprise to you that we think Kelly Slater is the best to ever to surf pipe now sure i know what your saying surfers like Andy irons , john john Florence and Jamie O’Brien are defiantly some of the best but if there has to be one best, our pick is Kelly and here’s why

5 Reasons Why We Think Kelly Slater Is The Best Surfer At Pipeline

(1) Experience

Its no secret that Kelly Slater is getting older hes no longer the Baywatch 18 year old he used to be but with age come the all important wisdom that’s needed to surfing a place like pipeline now Kelly hold many pipeline records he has one the pipeline masters more than any other surfer  he first one it in 1992  and has been the most consistent surfer in the vent winning it 7 times with the last being in 2013  hes also the oldest Pipe Master  ever to win at age 41.

Now being an incredible all-round athlete and having incredible desire to win might help you be the greatest surfer of all time with a casual 11 World Champion titles to his name  Kelly Slater’s record is undeniable and after surfing pipeline for over 20 plus years every winter, You can safely say his experience of the spot is like none other on the tour and we have seen just what Kelly can do when his back is up against the wall. Although the champ is on the other side of 40 with a long list of injury’s as well as physically double the age of some of the competitors on tour you have to wonder how long he can keep doing this. but thinking Kelly is out would be like keeping Michael Jordan out of your all time fantasy basketball team.

(2) Consistency

Kelly Slater is probably the most consistent surfer on the planet he just loves to surf but his greatest strength is his consistency with all the smaller details Kelly’s not just catching fluke waves or the boom sets that come through. Hes consistently there every winter on all the good days hes even got wave of the winter in 2014 and wone more peiple line events than any other surfer let alone be the top 2 in a pipeline event for the best part of 20+ years.

(3) Performance

There is no argument that Kelly Slater isn’t a good surfer, he has taken on the worlds best at pipeline and won many times beating surfers like Andy irons Jamie O’Brien and john Florence in an epic final at pipe in firing waves,  not to mention this hes an 11 time world surfing champion won more events that anyone in history and won the pipe masters 7 times. Kelly has won against almost every other great or good surfer at pipeline because of his performance in the tube aswell as wave knowledge, hes just incredible on a surfboard coming out of waves that would don’t think its possible. Even at 46 yeas young he competed at the 2018 pipe masters and Kelly fell off his board in the barrel and some how managed to get back on his board and come out the tube if this isn’t a true sing of the best pipeline surfer ever i don’t know who is.

(4) Knowledge

Surfing pipeline isn’t just something your average Jo walks up on the beach and paddles out and drops in first wave, the locals might not be to happy with you. its a whole new experience for surfers with some times 40-70 surfers in the water, you could say the line up is pretty crowded. Pipeline has its own pecking order and strictly enforced with localisum. Kelly Slater has earned his right to be in the line ups because of his time spend at the spot hes taken his fair share of beating over the years and showed just what hes capable off when the waves get big. To become a pipeline expert you have to know everything people line up the best way to do that is to surf it  “a lot” and that’s exactly what Kelly has done for almost the last 30 years from a young grommet working out the take off points, learning how different swell directions and trade winds affect the waves, which ones to miss and which ones to go on all comes with experience. Most surfers on the world tour would come to Hawaii for 4-6 weeks but Slater would come earlier that most others and stay later than anyone else just to learn everything he can about pipeline as well as master other Hawaiian waves.  Putting in that extra time over the years and really helped him command the line up and he know every spot.. He even said hes been snorkelling over the reef when its flat to learn what the reef looks like underneath the waves. now that’s dedication

(5) Motivation

Most professional surfers Kelly’s age have retired from professional surfing years ago, even world tour veterans like 3 time world champion mick fanning retired at 37 compared to Kelly’s 46 with a 9 year difference why does Slater continue to push the boundaries of what he can do at pipeline. If you have ever read anything about Kelly Slater or seen any interviews you will know hes a smart guy and knows his body will get weaker with age but his mind is stronger but he also loves to win, competing is a driving force for him to progress and to be fair hes been doing it his whole life, so you can guess hes got pretty good.  Staying fresh and staying in the mix with the new younger generation gives Kelly that fire of competition and also gives him that motivation to keep improving and stay in shape to even extend his surfing career longer. Who knows, we might see Kelly Slater crowned as pipe champion at 50 or 60 you never know with Kelly Slater.

We want to know what you think

Is Kelly the greatest pipeline surfer ever or is he just over hyped, we want to know if you think differently and who you would put as the best pipeline surfer ever.

Heat Seeker

The Heat Seeker is my go-to board for everyday average conditions, handling any waves I throw at it and always a lot of fun. This board is fast, lose, lively and skatey while still being able to throw it into power turns. Has extra paddling ability/speed through flatter sections compared to your average shortboard (due to the extra volume) helping to maximise everyday conditions, and get more out of each surf. This board has also been a perfect travel board for me, it ended up being my go-to board to surf in Bali on days up to about double overhead, as it allowed me to get lose and try new manoeuvres.

Overall it’s going to perform best in any sort of waist height to double overhead surf.

The Bandit

The Bandit is my go to board for those perfect pumping days, at a quality break. It will give you tons of drive and hold in the pocket of steep faced waves/ solid surf/ and on rail, so it will always hold your line. It has a very responsive, controlled, smooth feel, great for critical high performance surfing. Throw it in to a turn as hard as you like, as vertical as you like and it will glide through.

It has been my workhorse for UK point/reef breaks, powerful UK beachies and the quality breaks around Bali, especially thriving on the more solid days at these breaks and performing well in the barrel. The bandit will perform best in good condition from chest high or above.

The Bull

The Bull is my board for small wave fun/performance. If conditions are small or a bit mushy I’ll take the bull out and it’s always a blast. Lightning fast as soon as you pop up with a lively loose feel. This board will fly through the flatter sections of the wave and give you loads of release/ slide through your turns, and tons of pop out of the lip for trying airs. The bull will out paddle any other short board, with tons of volume, flat rocker and width, helping you to maximise the smaller and mushier days and come out of the water with the biggest smile on your face. It performs best in any sort of tiny to overhead surf.

The Majority of these high flyers are doing all this while all other family commitments daily routine mundaneness chores bills and all that other good stuff. these kinds of people have a hunger for better something greater the plan is visualised their in there head all before 8am the crazy some of you may say but you change one thing at a time a you to can change your habits your routine and the successfulness of you days in a few steps, to start i would suggest ‘inspirational content’, this will be the quickest way to hard-wire your brain to the right motives, consistently reminding yourself through audio or a video to get you in the mood. there will be some diet changes as well giving up caffeine, alcohol, sugar, gluten and all the other things winners do. Like reading a book a week while making time to write your journal about fasting one day a week.

  • Sleep

  • This seems to be the best way to use my time. Especially in winter when it’s still dark before 8am.

WINNERS IN LIFE

THE SECRETS OF SURF PHOTOGRAPHY

THE SECRETS OF SURF PHOTOGRAPHY

The Secrets of Surf Photography

Subject:

when your photographing surfing you want to convey something in your photos? wave shape, surfing style, spray from turns, and above all, you want a connection with the surfer in the shot.
This is tricky if you’re 100m away from the water’s edge… At best you will get ‘atmospheric’ landscapes that just happen to contain a surfer.

shots are all taken straight on from the water’s edge looking out if you can get an angel on the surfer looking down the line of the wave so looking into the tube this gives a much better perspective not all costs will allow you to be able to do this beach breaks in particular,

also think if you can get close do it it will be less strain on your lens an result in better images.

Settings

The setting colour positioning and what’s in your scene is not going to change that much when shooting surfing , a cloud might come over and that changes the look of things but your shooting the same break the same wave at the same angle, most cameras will have a scene mode and you can find that scene that best suits your area, even auto mode will give a good round settings for your scene,

Your two main priories are speed and focus many points and shoot cameras will not have a manual mode but its sport mode the faster shot and fast focus the camera will determine, if yours using a SLR go manual like I previously said the settings will not change too drastic when shooting surfing and better yet once you have some good settings for a particular beach on a sunny day save those settings, so you don’t have to waste time adjusting the next time you come again.

so when shooting the wave unbroken is dark while the spray is bright white so high contrast, the reason for wanting to use manual mode most auto features on a camera will want to overexpose for the dark of the wave or underexpose due to metering for the white spray.

it will take a few test photos to work this out where you want your balance to be. take a range of different settings and look what pictures had the best exposure and hold on to those settings, when clouds come over and reduce sunlight you will have to adjust settings again.

What settings to try?

surfing is a fast-paced and water move kinda quick you want to capture that moment and every drop of spray so shutter speed and aperture
you want a fast shutter speed 1/1000th of a second or faster. this determining what aperture I can use and what iso I can use. if you try to keep the iso between 100-800 this will reduce noise the better your camera the better the range you can go above 800 with little noticeable difference

getting the correct exposure?

If it’s too bright, then make the ISO as low as it goes first. If it’s still too bright, make the shutter speed faster, or finally make the aperture f-number higher (this reduces the amount of light entering the camera), but try not to go above f/16 as you start to lose sharpness.

with pro gear and equipment a lens with 2.8 for zoom and a sensor capable of relatively noise free photos at iso speed of 3200 or above !! but don’t be disheartened entry-level photography shots can seem just as good shots as pro equipment if you get your settings right.

People always want to know about the gear so here is a rundown of what we use.

Nikon Canon and some Sony mirrorless cams have a great range of lenses and each has there purpose benefits and draw down to each

70-200 and 16-35mm are in my usual lens kit. Also a 50mm and 400mm telephoto. And always a fisheye

My advice would create a style that is recognisable. Something the viewer will know is your image without seeing the photo credit. I think it’s so important these days, especially with how many people are out shooting surf and action sports images to create work that is meant to last. Don’t be so focused on logos or how good the action is, but more on the emotion in the image.

(3) Low Impact

Stand Up  Paddleboarding is a great way to get exercise with a low impact, because of the position of paddling and the movement required to pull you through the water it is unlikely that you will do damage to the tendons and ligaments of your joints or have any breakages or spinal issues. Because of the minimal movement required sport, it is possible to use up a lot of calories without damaging your joints. whereas in other more explosive sports like tennis or running there would be a higher risk of experiencing shin splints or possible knee and hip pain.

(4) Cross Training

If you stand up paddle board you will know that it probably helps you with a lot of other aspects in your day to day life,  SUP is a great way to improve general fitness as well as cardiovascular endurance as well as upper body strength endurance. (7) Improve Your Balance

It’s a no-brainer that from the first time you stand on a board to the years later it defiantly helps to improve balance otherwise, you might still be swimming more than you want to.Balance is also a great attribute to have in almost every other sport as well as everyday life activity’s. if you train at a high level in sports such as football or basketball, rugby stand Up Paddleboarding can be great for improving your balance as well as strengthen the ankle and joint through stability training as well as limit possible injury’s and help strengthen weaker areas…

(8) A Surfing Alternative

And a damn good one, if you’re one with the ocean and can get enough of it then you probably do more than just surf a shortboard… you probably longboard, kitesurf, windsurf, and sup. supping is especially good for those flatter days and for people just starting out who need a lot more stability and volume to their board, it’s a great alternative for people who have difficulty or fear of surfing. The great thinking about stand up is you can almost get anyone from any age trying it from age 8-80 if you struggle going out on the water in surfing or other water sports supping allows you to get out there and catch the waves and enjoy the surf with your friends.

(9) Yoga

Yoga and paddle boarding are a perfect combo as yoga can be very spiritual and using the paddleboard surroundings as a catalyst for a more enjoyable and relaxing experience is a great idea. Using the paddleboarding adds an extra dimension of balance to the activity. This can be a lot of fun as well as very challenging for someone who is already an experienced practitioner of yoga. In addition, the ambience that is associated with paddle boarding is far more pleasant and relaxing than being in a cramped gym or fitness studio. The sun and water will enhance the experience greatly.

(10) Bigger Muscles Less Injury’s

Useful for rehabilitation injuries: Because of its low impact nature, paddle boarding can be a useful tool for people in rehab to gently increase strength without doing any harm. It is very gentle on your muscles and joints. After spending a day out on a paddleboard, it’s natural to feel a little sore all over your body. But soreness is a good thing because that means you are building up your overall body strength improving your muscles power strength and stamina and over a long time this exercise will allow hypertrophy of the heart and you to become fitter.
