Team rider Jack has been putting the predator surfboard through its paces last few months and this is his verdict.

Our Team Rider Jack Atlantic is back at it again with another Vlog about what he’s been up to surfing in the UK winter.

This episode jack shows off his predator board that he has been frothing on since he got it in 2017. It’s been his go to in the smaller waves because of its versatility of higher volume upfront but high performance in the tail, just watch jack surfing some little gems in a quiet beach and you might just have to agree with him.

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

The Best Camera For Surf Photography and Video

Sam from SBS boards

What I use and the team around me uses to get our shots. what lenses we use settings and all the rest that goes with taking photos and video for surfing.

I will start by saying im no camera guru. I have grown with knowledge and equipment over the years to get the shots we get for all of our review videos and quick edits for our Instagram channel.

The Basics

if you new to this type of photography/video like most sports photography you will want a camera that can focus fast as although you will be waiting for waves or your particular rider to get up and riding once up you want to catch the action as fast as possible. Surfing is one of these passions that takes place quite far away from the shore and you can get waterproof housings that go over your camera so you can get closer to the action.the king of shots will be talking about will be from the beach where everything can be framed and you get a steady shot.

Basic Equipment list

1: Long focal lens 200/300/400/500mm

2: Vidio or Photography camera

3: Tripod (A Must)

4: Sun Cream, Hat, Windproof Shell

Tamron 150-600mm
Sony a6500 camera
Tripod
Sun Hat

1: The Lens

The Lens may or may not be the most important part of the setup and usually is more expensive than the camera. usually known and Telephoto lenses,
I currently use a Tamron 150-600mm lens this gives me the flexibility to shoot closer to the shore if necessary and also way out back on the set waves. as a basic introduction to these kinds of shots, I would start with a 300mm these can be bought from most manufacturers as a 100-300mm zoom lens this is a great starting point Some shots of the setup and zoom you can expect with this lens (insert images)

2: The Camera

iv been using the Sony a6500 for over a year now with 4k and a good HD Slomo and lightning fast focusing with native lenses this camera has served me well on 2 Team trips for shots over a year as well as multiple other shoots. the mirrorless cameras have an added bonus as they have a smaller sensor size they can also get a further reach on full frame sensor lenses such as the Tamron 150mm-600mm Amount Lens. with the smaller (Cropped Sensor) on the A6500, this lens becomes in effect a having a 225mm – 900mm lens this is huge when trying to get close to the subject. the only problem with this is that a lens that fits on one type of camera and camera that fits another means you need an adaptor to get them to work together I use the sony laea4 adaptor this allows me to use most of the functionality of the camera to its full potential but with limited effect in certain modes (i will talk more on this) the added benefits of this camera, it can take superfast consecutive images at 11Fps thats 11 photos per second continuously up to I believe 60 seconds for the surf it best to burst mode as you only usually want the more exciting bits turns, airs, carve’s etc.

Tamron 150-600mm
Sony La-ea4 Adaptor
Sony a6500 camera

3: Tripods (Are A Must)

When zooming in at such long distances a slight wobble in the camera or lens creates an exaggerated wobble on the camera this is amplified further when shooting in slightly windy conditions. to improve these Tripods are a must, there are two main differences in tripods video tripods usually heavier and have additions support and a bigger video head on the tripod for smoother shots, the weight although seems like a hindrance actually helps stabilise the camera shake more. the Photography tripod usually lighter and less bulky. as camera shake is less important as you are (freezing a moment) in time as opposed to (recording everything). these range in prices depending on materials and construction I would not go for anything less than £80 for a tripod although that may seem a lot to someone starting out a good tripod is a good foundation that everything is built on, for photography you can also use a monopod or even handheld but with surfing you can be waiting around a while, so i would take something to support the camera.

4: Sun Cream, Hat, Windproof Shell

its the things you can easily forget but while standing on a beach you wish you had! Sun Cream – is an obvious one you don’t want to get burnt even if it looks cloudy it’s surprising how burnt you can get. The Hat – something with a brim or peak is ideal this will help with seeing the camera screen or through the viewfinder and reduce the amount you have to squint. The Windproof – while standing still for a while you will start to feel the cold especially when the wind picks up this also doubles as a camera lens cover if you get a downpour of rain.

Alternative Recommended Camera setups

we have a mix of setups in our team canon Canon for photos and also Panasonic for another video angle
Here are the setups and prices highs and lows of each.

The Sony Setup (Video & Photo)

Tamron 150-600mm

£600-800

Sony La-ea4 Adaptor

£200-£250

Sony a6500 camera

£1000-£1300

The Sony Video set up for me is a great setup a bit of work with the adaptor focusing can be an issue at times, but if left in wide focus area has proved most successful for me. the 11fps is great for photos and the versatility of the 4k and HD-slomo is great to see the clip below for slomo.

The Good
in-body, stabilisation helps with camera/ lens shake reduction
the cropped sensor allows me a longer focal reach ideal for long-range surfing shots.
reasonably lightweight fits in my bag no problem

The Bad
Batteries – I eat through batteries like nothing else maybe its because I bought the non-sony branded batteries but one every half hour when videoing,
LCD SCREEN – hard to see in sunlight and upping the brightness just kills the battery faster, I use the digital viewfinder for the best results and battery efficiency
Adaptor – the adaptor is a plus and minus as you lose many useful functionality features from the camera such as follow focus tracking and some focusing modes.
Get Verry hot if used in direct sunlight and recording in 4k can get Verry hot. Pulling the screen away will help this a little

The Canon Setup (Photography)

Canon 100-400mm

£1200-£1400

Canon 7d MkII

£700-£800

Canon 1.4x extender

£250-£400

This has been an incredible set up for photos I can’t speak highly enough at the out of camera shots sharpness and speed of this set up, you may have to play with the manual setting to get it just right but if you are starting out sports mode is a great starting point a fast shutter speed will freeze the action and all water in its place.

The Good
Large range of great lenses
High frames per second shooting 10fps
cropped sensor for additional reach see picture
Lightweight option compared to a fixed 500mm prime lens
Versatile reach close to far-reaching with the 100-400 lens or 160-640 equivalent on this camera body

The Bad
video – No 4k but a great HD colour rendering out of the camera

Some shots recently taken

The Panasonic Setup (video)

Panasonic 100-400mm

£800-£1200

Panasonic GH5

£1300-£1500

Setup Designed specifically for video has in-depth feature for video greater codecs and multiple recording modes for better post-production this has been used in addition to the sony setup as an alternate angle and in addition in case one or the other cameras miss a crucial wave.

The Good
Vidio specific DSLR
Great out of camera 4k up to 60fps and HD 180fps slomo
cropped sensor for additional reach
Lightweight compact option
stabilisation combo of in body stabilisation and lens stabilisation for smoother shots.
Great Battery life
Bright screen easily visible in sunlight

The Bad
limited lenses available
difficult to auto focus in diffrent lighting conditions

Are Epoxy Surfboards Better For The Environment?

Are Epoxy Surfboards Better For The Environment?

Why are Epoxy Surfboards Better For The Environment?

Surfing is getting More Environmentally friendly than ever before we as a tribe are more conscious and environmentally aware of our actions as a surfer. In the creation of our beloved surf creations we use our fair amount of toxic products from surfboards, foams & wetsuits to our not so environmentally friendly travel plans that might include a trip to Bali or a few hours drive to get to the perfect surf.  But with more and more eco-friendly options available can me chose to be a more environmentally friendly surfer with the products we buy. electric cars, recycled products, bags for life and getting rid of any single use plastic is a great start but  but as surfers how can we chose our surf gear to be better for the environment. There is a growing movement to make more eco-friendly surfboards and other surf products. There are some incredible new product that we are working on ourselves in partnership with other companies to procure more ECO friendly surfboards but most of the surfboard industry uses PU foam + Polyester resin or Epoxy resin with an EPS Foam with most smaller surfboard companies still use polyester resin and polyurethane resin from the 60s

Looking in to these 2 main types of production of surfboard in the world we wanted to ask the question which one is better for the environment and why. Ats SBS boards we started out making PU boards back in 2010 all the way through to 2013 until we switched complete to epoxy construction across all our board. the reason were mostly performance based advantages with others like better durability and more ECO friendly that PU boards. Below are our reasons why we think Epoxy Surfboards are better for the environment

Last Longer

Yep epoxy boards are harder to break, as we stated previously they are stronger and better for the environment with less toxicity involved in the process but they also last longer meaning you don’t have to buy a new board as often helping to decrease landfill. If you have ever surfed an epoxy board or bought a second-hand one you will probably notice it has far fewer compressions and signs of wear and tare as it has a higher tensile strength and better impact strength compared with standard PU. It can be very difficult to permanently dent or break, through intense surfing and even if it’s been used for 1-2 years most usually have very minimal or no visible damage to the deck or rails. Overall its our thoughts that as the surf industry goes is moving to a more sustainable approach to building surfboards customers are more aware than ever where their products come from and companies in the future will have to ensure that their board are hitting all the bases and produced ethically and in an environmentally friendly way if they want to stay current

Better for the environment

We use epoxy resin because it’s much stronger and less toxic than polyester resin. Polyesters resins contain styrene which is subject to increasingly stringent controls on emissions. Epoxy’s do not generally cause any problems with atmospheric pollution and epoxy resin has 75% fewer VOCs (Volatile Organic compounds) contained in the resin itself and two-thirds fewer VOCs are released into the atmosphere than from polyester resin (VOCs are a source of air pollution and can be a significant health hazard). Their are also companies working on a fully recycles surfboard  with high performance starting from grinding down eps and then melting it to be combined with new foams or a reusable resin that after a few years of using your board you can take it back to its original state to be reuse. there are a lot of exciting prospects in the surfboard industry today. At SBSboards we at experimenting with bio foams that still have an incredible  performance and  rigid flex but is 100% biodegradable, 99% bio based, and carbon neutral. In our view epoxy is the resins of the future with numerous of different concoctions and applications, it’s such a tunable medium! Research into renewable, bio based, epoxy resins such as “super sap” are producing some incredible results especially when compared to polyester which is less tunable, cheaper more toxic and more, brittle.

Stronger

We are so confident in our construction techniques at SBS Boards that we regularly demonstrate its strength and toughness compared to other poly/pu. This high strength and durability gives us the confidence that if you drop or knock an SBS board it is less likely to break or ding compared to a standard poly/pu board, therefore helping your SBS Board to stay stronger for longer giving you great value for money as you won’t have to replace your board as often. helping keep those boards out of the dump. Epoxy Resin has much Better adhesive qualities as well as superior strength and flex properties. Structurally epoxy surfboards exhibits greater tensile strength meaning more durable in the surf and to dings. Epoxy strength and modulus is close to double that of polyester, thus its Improved resistance to fatigue and micro cracking. This helps to keep that original flex for years were as the flex responsiveness can be lost over time on a PU board. This also helps reduced degradation from water ingress giving epoxy a much higher resistance to osmosis. All of this helps to keep an epoxy surfboards original integrity and performance so you can make your money go a lot longer way.

Top 10 Unwritten Rules of Surfing Every Surfer Should Know

Top 10 Unwritten Rules of Surfing Every Surfer Should Know

Surfing is without a doubt one of, if not the coolest sport on the planet, so it comes as no surprise to know that the worldwide surfing population is increasing more than ever. This inevitably means more people in the water trying to catch waves, surfing has long had a set of rules and etiquette to follow in the water to help reduce injury and help all water users get along. The following are 10 of the most basic rules and etiquette on how to behave in the water, if you are a beginner it’s a great idea to take note as these rules are almost universally adhered to and will help a lot in your progression in surfing.

(1) Have fun

It comes without saying but if you’re not having fun you’re not surfing, the infamous quote stating the best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun. This couldn’t be truer, as is your having fun smiling and enjoying the surf you’re going to give off great vibe in the lineup and spread the positivity.

(2) Know who has Right of Way

To help stop confusion in the lineup, drop ins and nasty collision it’s important to know who has the right to the wave the basic rule is, the surfer closest to the “peak of the wave has the right of way. Basicity the person closest to the white water peak/lip as it breaks has priority. When paddling for a wave always look both ways to see if someone else is on it. The surfer on the shoulder or further down the line should always give way to a surfer already on the wave. It is possible at some beach to have a split peak where surfers take off at the same time in different directions (one surfer goes left, one surfer goes right). This requires communication to ensure clarity on the other surfer intentions

(3) Never, Ever Drop In

Probably one of the worst things you can do in a line up as dropping in is not only dangerous for both surfers but also creates bad vibes and tension. “Dropping in” is where the surfer closest to the peak “inside” has the right of way and another surfer further down the wave takes off in front of them dropping in on the wave. Drop ins have caused a lot of injuries in surfing and are especially dangerous, in bigger conditions. They usually increase the chance of boards hitting, leashes getting tangled and physical contact is made. Usually resulting in the wave is wasted. Stay smart and aware, that way everyone can enjoy the waves. Don’t drop in

(4) Don’t Snake

You don’t ever want to be that surf knows for snaking waves from people “Snaking” is when a surfer in the lineup paddles around someone in order to have the right of way or be closer to the peak. Again not cool for line-up vibes this is usually seen as “stealing a wave” from under the surfer’s nose. Good thing to avoid

(5) Paddle Out Smart

Depending on where you surf, may depend on the style of the paddle out point break/ reef/ beach. Don’t paddle out straight through the centre of the rideable waves as this will usually cause frustration for the surfers riding the waves as well as cause a collision. On a classic beach break or sport with multiple peaks, make sure to paddle out in the flatter sections or in between sets whilst there is a lull in the waves. To avoid being hit by another surfer paddle wide or paddle into the white water in the opposite direction the surfer is travelling this will help to keep your fingers and toes intact.

(6) Say Sorry

As surfer we are all trying to catch that elusive wave or get one more ride in before we go back to normality, so at some point you will accidentally drop in or you will get in someone’s way It’s going t happens we are all human so if you know you’re in the wrong apologise and say sorry respectfully and a mistake and respectfully apologize and don’t do it again.

(7) Never let go of your Board

If you’re on your own or surfing in the most crowded place it shouldn’t matter good surfing etiquette should always be used, letting you board go at any point can in danger other surfers/water users as well, as yourself. Holding on to your board is not only a respectful consideration for others but a legitimate skill for a surfer’s. It is dangerous to others, especially in a crowded lineup if you find you can’t hold on to your board then you should probably go back to smaller waves and work on the basics

(8) Learning takes time

when beginning your career in surfing everyone know it takes time to master the basic movements, not to mention gain knowledge about currents, rips breaks and wave knowledge, keeping this in mind chose waves and conditions right for your ability as if you a beginner heading out into a busy line up on a 6 foot perfect day probably isn’t the best idea for everyone’s safety leave that for the more experienced surfers and use the lesser quality waves (smaller/white-water|). As these will be perfect to hone your skill early on

(9) Share the waves / No Prejudice

If you have ever been out surfing and there are 1-2 guys catching all the waves, or there seems to be the same long border, SUPer, body boarder or kayaker on every wave it can be frustrating and sometimes push people to be aggressive and drop in creating hostility in the water. The best surf days are the ones where everyone takes it in turns and are friendly and respectful, chatting laughing and encouraging each other by sharing, regardless of ability or craft. Just because you have the ability to catch-all the waves, doesn’t mean you should. :

(10) Have Respect

Having respect for the other surfer in the water is one thing but respect for your environment and the place your surf is more important than anything. whether it be keeping the litter off the beach or using more organic products, leaving an environment in as good or better condition to when you found it is the very soul and roots of surfing so help keep it clean respect the marine life and you have the most fun in the ocean.
